A spin-off from Cornell Tech in NYC

Shade is the outcome of Dr. Emmanuel Dumont's postdoctoral research on wearable UV measurements, under the supervision of MacArthur fellow Professor Deborah Estrin.

While researching wearable UV technology at the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute in 2014, Dr. Emmanuel Dumont learned of the difficulties lupus patients face in trying to prevent flares triggered by sunlight. What he previously viewed as a scientific and engineering challenge — making UV measurement mobile and affordable — turned into a pursuit with more personal implications.
